First Entry — Spring 2019

They met in a community garden on the east side of the city — she was staking tomato plants, he was hopelessly lost looking for the composting bins. The garden, as gardens do, slowed them both down.

What followed were seven years of Saturday mornings in soil, of learning what thrives in shade and what needs full sun. They planted a kitchen garden together in their second year. By the third, they were arguing — lovingly — about whether to grow dahlias or sweet peas along the back fence. (The answer was both.)

This September, we're asking the garden to be our witness. The same soil that grew our first shared herbs, the same light that showed us what we could tend together. We want you to stand in it with us.

The Arrival

The Walled Kitchen Garden

3:30 pm — Gates Open

Guests arrive through the north gate of Thornfield Estate, following a gravel path edged with lavender and box hedging. The kitchen garden will be open for wandering before the ceremony begins.

The Ceremony

The Rose Arbour

4:00 pm — Please be seated by 3:50

Beneath a canopy of climbing roses trained over iron arches, we'll say our vows in the old walled garden's heart. The arbour faces west — the afternoon light falls long and golden through the Rosa 'Bobbie James' overhead.

The Reception

The Heritage Orchard

5:30 pm — Into the Orchard

Dinner is in the old orchard, under canvas and apple trees. Long tables, candlelight, the smell of cut grass and ripe fruit. The speeches happen as the sun drops behind the espaliered pears on the south wall.

Getting Here

Parking is available in the lower meadow field (follow the bunting). A minibus will run from Chipping Norton town centre at 3:00 pm and 3:20 pm, returning at midnight and 1:00 am. Please let us know on your RSVP if you'd like a seat.

The Season

What will be in bloom

September 13th falls in the overlap between late summer and early autumn — the most complex moment in the garden calendar. Here is what you will find.

"At 4 pm in September, the light at Thornfield comes from the south-west at a low angle. It makes everything it touches look like it's on the last page of a very good story."

Rosa 'Gertrude Jekyll'

Old English Rose

Deep cerise-pink, heavy with fragrance. She'll be at her second flush — the blooms more open, the scent richer than June.

Dahlia 'Café au Lait'

Heritage Dahlia

The colour of milky coffee in afternoon light. Each bloom the size of a side plate, nodding at head height along the orchard fence.

Cosmos bipinnatus

Mexican Aster

Thousands of them, planted in the meadow borders. They move in any breeze. The ceremony chairs will look out over a pink haze of them.

Black-Eyed Susan

Golden rays around dark centres — they mark the path from the car park to the gate. Robust, joyful, completely unashamed.

Chinese Wisteria

Past its peak but still fragrant, trailing from the arbour arches. A few clusters will remain — lavender-grey, paper-soft.

The orchard trees will be heavy with fruit just beginning to colour. Dinner will happen beneath them, the smell of ripe apples overhead.

The garden will smell of roses and warm earth. Bring a layer for the evening — September dew falls early in the Cotswolds.
